Tips for finding a good, affordable face cream

How do you see through the false promises of cosmetic manufacturers? It has been proven time and time again that the more expensive (moisturizing) facial creams do not perform better than the cheaper versions. Promotional labels such as “Hypoallergenic!”, “Dermatologically tested!”, or “Contains no parabens!” are meaningless in themselves. There are better ways to judge whether or not a cream will do what it promises. You need to know which substances keep the skin young and which substances are harmful to the skin. It is also very important whether or not the cream is in a jar, because certain ingredients will work less well if they come into contact with oxygen. Apart from that, a jar is not very hygienic because you always put your fingers in the jar to remove the cream.

Empty promises

Finding a good and affordable face cream or day cream is not an easy task, because the range is overwhelming and it is not easy for a layman to make sense of the ingredient lists with difficult Latin names.

In these lists you should look for those ingredients that hydrate and soothe your skin. Antioxidants are also recommended because they eliminate free oxygen radicals – which cause skin aging. Examples of antioxidants include vitamins C and E. It is even more important to know which substances are harmful to the skin and should therefore be avoided.

Tips for a good affordable facial cream

The price

A day cream that does what it is supposed to do does not have to be too expensive for the simple reason that the active ingredients in day creams do not cost much. If you purchase an expensive cream, you are mainly paying for the brand, the beautiful packaging and advertising campaigns.

The packaging
Never buy a day cream in a jar. Substances that really do something for your skin, such as antioxidants, cannot withstand light and air.

It is best to buy a pump bottle (made of opaque material) or a tube, also because these are much more hygienic to use.

The ingredients

Ingredients to Avoid
Below are some examples of harmful substances that you should avoid because they dry out or irritate your skin :

  • Perfume
  • Alcohol (except cetyl, stearyl, cetearyl and lanolin alcohol)
  • Pink, blue or green colored creams
  • Menthol
  • Mint
  • Eucalyptus
  • Lavender
  • Tea tree oil
  • Citrus fruit extracts (except citric acid)
  • Bergamot
  • Cinnamic acid
  • Oxybenzone

Ingredients that are good for your skin
A day cream is good if it also contains substances that hydrate your skin . That means retaining moisture.
Moisturizing substances are in particular:

  • Silicones (e.g. dimethicone, cyclomethicone)
  • Glycerin
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Collagen
  • Petrolatum
  • Mineral oils
  • Vegetable oils (jojoba oil or olive oil)
  • Lanolin (wool fat)
  • Sodium PCA
  • Urea.

Antioxidants are actually also indispensable because they prevent skin aging. Antioxidants include vitamin E (Tocopherol) and vitamin C (Ascorbic acid).

How do you use day cream?

Once you have found a good, affordable moisturizer, you need to use it correctly for good results. It goes without saying that you first cleanse your skin thoroughly. Furthermore, your skin retains more moisture if you apply the cream to slightly damp skin. Do not completely dry your face after showering, or moisten your face with your hands, and only then apply the day cream.

Other advice

  • If you don’t like your skin feeling greasy, creams containing silicone are recommended. These ingredients are also very suitable if you have allergic reactions.
  • If you have dry skin, petrolatum, mineral oils, vegetable oils and lanolin are especially recommended. These substances retain the moisture in your skin well.
  • If you suffer from acne, avoid Lanolin (or wool fat).
  • If you live in an area with a lot of air pollution, you should pay extra attention to your facial care.
  • Dark skin has different needs than white skin.
